1. Pink Well Challenge Finalist Profile: Friends Fighting Breast Cancer

Friends Fighting Breast Cancer was born from the single idea that friends joining together in support of one special cause can and will make a difference, and for 16 years we have been doing just that. What makes our group unique is that we are 100% volunteer, with each member dedicating his or her free time toward making breast cancer history. Through a variety of exciting fundraising events and generous donations we have raised $809,000 towards breast cancer research at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.

In October 2011, FFBC was recognized on the Visionary Donor Wall at Massachusetts General Hospital for our philanthropic efforts and fundraising achievement. This six-panel glass display resides in the Main Lobby and features the names of nearly 500 individuals, families, foundations and corporations that have made significant contributions since the hospital's founding 200 years ago in 1811. FFBC is proud to be part of this history!

Friends Fighting Breast Cancer recently embarked on an exciting journey to meet its commitment to Mass General to reach $1 million in total giving by 2014.  FFBC wants to continue to give people hope by supporting independent research efforts at Mass General so that we can live in a world without breast cancer. Through the generosity of our supporters and the opportunities provided by Pink Well we are on our way to reaching our goal!

Monies raised by Friends Fighting Breast Cancer go directly to breast cancer research and care initiatives at the MGH Cancer Center. Our gifts are unrestricted, therefore Cancer Center leaders are free to utilize the funds to support the breast cancer program’s most urgent needs. This provides the world’s leading breast cancer physician-scientists with the financial freedom and flexibility to pursue laboratory research. Such entrepreneurial research may lead to ground-breaking discoveries of new genetic targets within tumors or help establish a clinical trial of a new targeted drug, or initiate a genetic study aimed at prevention and early diagnosis.

With each event we hold we bring people together in support of this very important cause. Whether they are fighting this disease, know someone who has been affected by breast cancer or just want to help, people are joining with us to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. Our work provides the opportunity for those affected by breast cancer to be proactive in their fight and it gives them hope for a better tomorrow. We receive countless notes about how much fun people have at our events and how thankful they are for the work we do. To us, every day is a success story.
