The mission of Casting for Recovery® (CFR) is to provide fly-fishing retreats specifically tailored for women who have or have had breast cancer. We seek to enhance the quality of life of breast cancer patients by providing retreats designed to promote and support mental and physical healing, at no cost to participants. We are committed to socioeconomic and cultural diversity.  Utilizing a strong volunteer corps our retreats are designed for survivors “at any age and any stage”  and it is our philosophy as we “guide one woman at a time” along her journey.

Recruiting and sustaining over 1500 volunteers who are dedicated to serving breast cancer survivors and Casting for Recovery.  What started as a grassroots effort in 1996 has translated to our ability to serve over 5,000 women in the past 15 years.  With a very small paid staff we rely on the kindness of our donors and volunteers to deliver our mission.  Many of our volunteers have been with us all those 15 years and we consider every volunteer, donor and participant to be part of our family.

As part of the Strategic Plan 2015, the goal of Casting for Recovery is to provide at least one retreat in every state.  Currently, we have retreat programs in 47 retreats in 36 states.  In 2011, due to volunteer, staff, and resource capacity, we unfortunately were not able to serve over 1400 who had applied.  Some women must wait two to three years for this opportunity.  In 2012 we will be adding four new retreats to help us meet that need and climb ever closer to our goal.

Growth!  We still do not have retreats in many states and need to be able to accommodate more survivors from our waiting list.  In 2011 we were unable to serve over 1400 women who were added to a waiting list.  There are identified states that need a volunteer retreat staff developed, trained, and promoted to self-sustainability.  This growth necessitates additional staff time to train and mentor volunteers; expanded outreach into communities to alert prospective participants and medical facilities to our available services, and grant writing for additional funds.

The letters we receive speak to our successes:

“Although I haven’t taken the time to say “thank you” until now, I’ve thanked you a million times in my heart!  It is no exaggeration to say this CFR retreat was absolutely the most wonderful experience of my life!  I feel like the luckiest person in the world to have been invited to participate in this amazing retreat. This retreat has meant the world to me and I’m sure you hear it over and over, but I just wanted to express how much I loved being a part of this life-changing event”. - Carol
